Since discovering the traditional craft of spiderweb embroidery, of which there are a number of existing examples in canal museums across England, I have made many items using this simple but stunning traditional technique. As a traditional thick boaters belt, you can see it on our Grand Union Canal Entertainment Company costumes.
In 2024 I created the Bradford on Avon ‘Jill in the Green’ costume. About 100 women contributed about 600 beautifully made individual leaves. This was worn by Jill as part of the Bradford on Avon Green Man (Jack in the Green) celebrations in 2024 and 2025. The dress can still be spotted at various community events in and around Wiltshire, sometimes it is worn by Jill and sometimes by ‘Mother May.’
I am also interested in the simple stitches that were used to decorate English smocks (mostly chain and feather) and have experimented with using patterns from existing garments alongside new shapes and motives, gradually developing a new symbolic language to use on samples and name letters for children. As you can tell from the photos, I enjoy using bright and bold colours! If you would like to discuss a commission, please use the contact page to get in touch.
